• Szklarska Poręba

Deep in the emerald forests surrounding Szklarska Poręba, where paths intertwine with the legends of treasure hunters and the Karkonosze Mountains' Rubenczal, lies the Red Cave.

This former quarry, shrouded in moss and intertwined with tree roots, still seems to whisper tales of visitors from distant lands searching for precious minerals.

The quarry's interior pulsates with the red of pegmatites, the white of quartz, and the violet of amethysts. It's sometimes difficult to find, because in summer, the Red Cave almost completely disappears into the embrace of nature. This happens in spring, when the trees begin to leaf out. The quarry then becomes a secret place. Only those who listen to the voice of the forest will find it.

A chapel dedicated to St. Lawrence – the patron saint of travelers and mineral seekers – was once intended to be built in the Red Cave. Its blessing surrounds those who still believe that the earth holds more than meets the eye. A shrine or the sign of the cross once served as protection against underground evil spirits that could lead miners to perdition. This may have been the case here as well.

Czerwona Jama is not just a place – it is also a gateway to the underworld, where secrets still await discovery.
