In the center of Szklarska Poręba there is one of the most interesting objects in this city - St. Luke's Mill. The building deserves attention not only because of its beautiful mountain architecture, but also because of the interesting history of this place and an interesting proposition for guests and residents of the city. St. Luke's Mill is one of the oldest historic buildings in Szklarska Poręba. The building from 1870 was initially a mill, inn and sawmill.
At the beginning of the last century, the building was destroyed by fire and in the years 1920-1922 reconstruction began under the supervision of construction counselor Franz E. Schuman. All that remains of the former building are the stone walls of the basement, ground floor and first floor. The owner of the facility at that time was Ewaryst Töpfer. To carry out the renovation, or rather the construction of a new building, the "Kunst und Gewerbehaus G.m.b.H." society was established, whose aim was also to take care of native Silesian art.
Architecturally, the renovated building resembled rural cottages with half-timbered and log construction, covered with shingles or slate. After reconstruction, the owner of the facility made several rooms available to a group of artists settled in Szklarska Poręba, known as the Brotherhood of St. Luke founded by Herman Hendrich. The first exhibition was opened on September 9, 1922. It was attended by, among others: prof. Hanns Fechner, prof. Arnold Busch, Geogr and Joachim Wichmann and Cirillo dell' Antonio - a sculptor from the School of Artistic Crafts in Cieplice. The association had eleven members. Their works were exhibited in the mill. Szklarska Poręba has always attracted creative people looking for inspiration for their works near Szrenica. It was like that 100 years ago, and it's still like that today. A few years ago, the Nowy Młyn Association was established, referring to the colony of artists active here in the 1920s and 1930s.
Currently, St. Luke's Mill is a carefully restored building that houses a cozy restaurant and guest rooms.
