Chojnik Castle is a well-preserved ruin of a defensive stronghold from the 13th century.
In the second half of the 13th century, Bolesław Łysy-Rogatka built a hunting manor here with defensive features, which was expanded by Bolko I the Strict at the end of the 13th century. "...During the times of Bolko II (probably around 1355), a castle was also built on Chojnik, replacing an earlier manor house. A stone fortress was built on a rocky peak descending from the south with a vertical wall, although it is small in size, but due to its location it is extremely difficult to conquer..." more on the Chojnik Castle website.
Despite many attempts, the castle was never conquered. However, it was destroyed by lightning and burned down in 1675.
The castle was built on the mountain of the same name at an altitude of 627 m above sea level. The climb, although a bit arduous, is rewarded with a picturesque view of the entire Jelenia Góra Valley. And from the castle tower there is a beautiful panorama of the Karkonosze, Jizera and Rudawy Janowickie Mountains.
Chojnik is open to tourists all days of the week. Every year, the Chojnik Castle Golden Belt Crossbow Tournament takes place here.
On sunny summer weekends you can watch knightly fighting shows prepared by the local knightly brotherhood.
